Abstract: Analysis of the argillaceous fraction of some podzolic soils and podzols of France has shown a double evolution of illite and chlorite through mixed layering into vermiculite.

illite → (illite-vermiculite) → vermiculitechlorite → (chlorite-vermiculite) → vermiculite

Vermiculite is more concentrated in the upper zones of the profiles where it constitutes 50 to 90 percent of the argillaceous fraction.
