Abstract: Some aspects of organo-clay chemistry that have interested a growing number of scientists are reviewed and discussed. Particular attention is directed to published evidence for the “reality” of clay compounds, the possible effects of high energy radiation on clay properties, industrial applications of modified clays and the increasing number of patents being granted in this field of applied chemistry. A number of areas of inadequate information where further basic research could lead to useful applications is pointed out.
