Stops will address water/mineral/biological sampling issues and performing environmentally sensitive field research unique to hot springs. An intervening series of classroom lectures includes overviews of: 1) Remote spectral imaging of mineral alteration zones in YNP by Eric Livo - U.S. Geological Survey; 2) Biomineralizaton of siliceous sinters by Kurt Konhauser - University of Alberta; 3) Iron and sulfur mineralization by Bill Inskeep - Montana State University and Kirk Nordstrom - U.S. Geological Survey; and 4) Phyllosilicates of YNP by David Mogk - Montana State University. A component for teacher professional development will be aimed at classroom educators and led by Amber Jarrard - University of Georgia. Participants will receive a copy of the Clay Minerals Society Workshop Lecture volume notes, which will contain review chapters and a road log by the above authors.

The group leaves by bus early Wednesday morning on June 10, 2009 from Billings, MT. Participants arrive mid afternoon at the Snow Lodge in Old Faithful, WY, where they stay overnight.
